Use the sign pointing when you refer to something. It doesn’t have to be based on a literally physical object in sight.

Examples
The person wants to see you.
Do you want the food?

There are two pointing structures. One is path-based and the other is location-based.

I run at school. (Location) 
I run to school. (Path)
