​It is a device implanted in the human head to help with hearing. It is pretty controversial within ASL communities because it turns out to be not enough to hear normally and it can leave permanent inner damage. 

Often parents of deaf children would force them not to sign, which is considered language deprivation that has serious impact in later life.
