At first, when television was invented, there was no caption. Later in the 1970s, there was a new device connected to TV to provide caption. In the 1990s, all TVs have captions ready inside, without a separate caption device. 

Some movie theaters have captions for occasions. In the past, instead of watching movies without captions, deaf people would watch foreign or silent movies.
